Truitt nabs GLVC honors
University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball junior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) was named the GLVC “Player of the Week” for her performances in USI’s wins over Wayne State University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis last week. It is the first time since the start of the season that a Screaming Eagle has earned player of the week honors and the first time in Truitt’s career.
Truitt averaged 20 points and six rebounds per game to help USI improve to 16-7 overall and 9-7 in the GLVC.
Against Wayne State, Truitt was one of three USI players to record 17 points. Her 12 second-half points helped USI turn a two-point halftime advantage into an 89-74 victory.
Truitt followed her 17-point performance with a game-high 23 points against Missouri-St. Louis. She was 7-of-11 from three-point range, missing USI’s all-time record for three-pointers in a single game (8) by just one.
For the season, Truitt leads USI and is third in the GLVC with 16.3 points per game. She leads the conference with 2.91 made three-pointers per game and needs just 10 three-pointers to break Deb Pope’s school-record for three-pointers in a single season (76, 1995-96).
Truitt, who helped the Eagles lock up a spot in the GLVC Tournament, joins fellow teammate Kennitra Johnson (New Albany, Indiana) as USI players to earn player of the week honors. It marks the first time since the 2001-02 season that two USI players have earned GLVC “Player of the Week” honors in the same season.
The Eagles will be on the road this week with stops at Edwardsville, Illinois, and Romeoville, Illinois. USI will play SIU Edwardsville Thursday, February 19, and Lewis University Saturday, February 21.
