USI women’s basketball slips up at Lewis
Box Score
ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team suffered through a 30-5 run between the end of the first half and the start of the second half as it fell, 85-74, to Lewis University Saturday afternoon at the Neil Carey Arena.
USI (17-8, 10-8 GLVC), which was without junior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) for a second straight game, jumped out to a 27-19 lead prior to the Lewis run. The Screaming Eagles, however, were held to just one field goal in a stretch that lasted nearly 15 minutes.
Turnovers and fouls cost the Eagles in the contest as they committed 29 turnovers and sent the Flyers to the free throw line 31 times. Lewis, consequently, connected on 25 of their attempts from the charity stripe.
The Eagles, who trailed by as many as 18 points at one time in the second period, went on a 14-5 run to cut the Lewis lead to eight late in the game. However, that was as close as the Eagles would get as they fell for the first time in four games.
Leading the Eagles was senior forwards Shajuan Lindsey (Midlothian, Illinois) and Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana). Lindsey scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Wells finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) also scored 11 points and was credited with a game-high five assists.
Lewis (15-10, 12-6 GLVC), which shot 50.9 percent from the field and had five players finish in double figures, was led by sophomore guard Shante Glenn and freshman forward Darcee Schmidt. Glenn scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds before fouling out in the closing minute of the contest, while Schmidt added 17 points.
Freshman guard Mary Moskal scored 14 points, while senior forward Bryanne Callahan chipped in 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior guard Tracy Buchholz added 10 points for the Flyers.
The Eagles will return to action Thursday, February 26, when they host Saint Joseph’s College in a 5:15 p.m. tip-off at the Physical Activities Center. USI will close its regular season schedule with Senior Day against the University of Indianapolis Saturday, February 28, at the PAC.
