EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team tips off its exhibition season Friday when the St. Louis Goldstars visit the Physical Activities Center for a 7 p.m. contest.
The Screaming Eagles are coming off a 20-10 campaign in 2003-04 which ended with a trip to the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Tournament. The Goldstars started their exhibition season with a 0-2 mark after losses to Central Missouri State University and Washburn University.
USI will be without the services of senior guards Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) and Kennitra Johnson (New Albany, Indiana) as well as freshman guard Brittaney Oeth (Mt. Vernon, Indiana). Truitt and Oeth are both nursing injuries, while Johnson will join the team in December. Truitt was USI’s leading scorer in 2003-04, averaging 16.5 points per game (ppg).
Junior forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) and senior forward/centers Andrea Engleking (Charlottesville, Indiana) and Megan Nelson (Clarendon Hills, Illinois) lead USI’s returnees. Green averaged 7.8 ppg and 4.7 rebounds per game (rpg), while Engleking and Nelson averaged 6.8 and 5.0 ppg, respectively.
“It’s going to be nice to play someone else,” Head Coach Rick Stein said. “They (Goldstars) will come in here and give us a good ball game.”
The Goldstars are led by former University of Missouri-St. Louis player Stretch James and former Emporia State University player Janel McNeal-Lewis. James leads the team with 6.0 rpg in the Goldstars first two games, while McNeal-Lewis has matched James for the team lead with 12.0 ppg.
USI opens the season November 15 when it travels to Huntsville, Alabama, to take on the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
