Eagle run puts chill on Lions
USI 89, North Alabama 51
EVANSVILLE, Ind.óThe University of Southern Indiana womenís basketball team defeated the University of North Alabama, 89-51, Wednesday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
Originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, the game between the Screaming Eagles and the Lions was moved up to 2 p.m. due to bad weather conditions.
USI (8-2), however, felt none of the effects of the cold weather outside as it warmed the building up with a shooting percentage of 52.1 percent.
The Eagles used a 42-3 run that lasted more than 12 minutes of the opening period to run away with their fourth straight victory. USI shot a blistering 55.8 percent from the floor and junior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Indiana) scored 18 of her career and game-high 26 points in the first half as the Eagles went into the locker room with a more than comfortable 55-25 lead.
Brandon was 8-of-9 from the floor in the opening period and finished the game 11-of-14 from the field in 22 minutes of action.
USI had four players finish in double digits, with senior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) chipping in 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Truitt hit five three pointers and finished the game with a team and game-high tying seven rebounds.
Freshman center Emily Meier (Mackinaw, Illinois) scored a career-high 11 points and matched Truittís performance on the boards as the Eagles out-rebounded the Lions 44-34. Senior forward Andrea Engleking (Charlottesville, Indiana) rounded out USIís double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Junior guard Tiara Brown (Normal, Illinois) had a career and game-high 11 assists, seven of which came in the opening frame.
UNA (4-8) was led by sophomore guard/forward Lauren Qualls. She finished with 19 points.
USI will return to action December 30 when it travels to Midland, Michigan to take on Northwood University (5-5) in the GLIAC/GLVC Holiday Classic. USI will take on Ferris State University (2-7) the following day. Start times are 2 p.m. and noon, respectively.
