Sophomore forward Jasmine Baines
(Jeffersonville, Indiana) scored a game and career-high 29 points to lead the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team to a 76-68 overtime victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at the Vadalabene Center.
USI (15-13, 7-10 GLVC) overcame a 12-point second-half deficit and survived its first overtime challenge of the 2005-06 season as it completed the season-sweep of SIU Edwardsville.
The Screaming Eagles, which trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, went into the locker room trailing 37-30. It marks the first time this season that the Eagles have won a game when trailing at the intermission.
After the Cougars scored five straight points to start the second period, the Eagles reeled off a 15-2 run to take their first lead of the contest.
The two teams traded leads for a brief period of time, but the Eagles took advantage of a pair of three-pointers by junior guard Katie Thiesenhusen
(Muskego, Wisconsin) to build a 59-50 lead with 5:29 remaining in regulation.
SIU Edwardsville (12-13, 6-11 GLVC), however, did not make it easy for the Eagles as it scratched its way to within four points with less than four minutes remaining in regulation.
The Cougars held the Eagles scoreless for the final three minutes of regulation to overcome a six-point deficit and send the contest into an extra period. Freshman guard Allison Fogle's bucket with six seconds remaining tied the contest at 64.
Freshman point guard Keisha Collins
(South Holland, Illinois) had a chance to win it in the closing seconds for the Eagles—much like she did in the previous meeting between the two schools last month—but could not get her shot to fall as the clock ticked down to zero.
USI struck first in overtime, but senior forward Alisa Corrillo's bucket with 3:19 remaining in overtime knotted the game at 66. Corrillo finished the game with a team-high 18 points to go with six rebounds.
The Cougars, who were 12-of-14 from the free throw line in the second half, had chances to take the lead from the charity stripe in overtime. However, SIU Edwardsville missed six of its eight free throw attempts in the extra session as it never took an advantage in the extra period.
USI, on the other hand, nailed down all six of its free throw opportunities as it pulled out the eight-point victory. Senior forward Ashley Green
(Otterbein, Indiana) gave the Eagles the lead for good with a jumper with 1:39 remaining in overtime and the Eagles scored the final six points from the free throw line to seal the victory.
Green and Thiesenhusen each finished with 13 points, while Collins dished out a game-high six assists. Freshman forward/center Jessica Minnick
(Carmi, Illinois) came off the bench to record eight points and a game-high tying seven rebounds. Baines scored 18 of her USI season-high 29 points in the final 25 minutes of the game.
USI will host the University of Missouri-Rolla Thursda
