Jolly's three-pointer lifts Eagles past D-I Morehead State
Southern Indiana (2-0 Exhbition): 75
at Morehead State (0-1 Exhibition): 74
Junior guard Marshay Jolly
(Merrillville, Indiana) connected on a three-pointer as time ran out to lift the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team to a 75-74 upset victory over NCAA Division I Morehead State University in an exhibition contest Monday evening.
The shot capped off an improbable comeback by the Screaming Eagles, who trailed by six points with less than two minutes remaining in the contest.
USI (2-0 Exhibition) built a 17-point second half lead, but a 36-9 run that lasted nearly 12 minutes put Morehead State in the driver's seat with a 70-63 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the game.
After a pair of Jolly free throws cut MSU's lead to 72-68, the Eagles forced three turnovers and when senior guard Katie Thiesenhusen's
(Muskego, Wisconsin) lay up found the bottom of the net, USI found itself in a 72-72 tie with 50 seconds to play in the game.
MSU's (0-1 Exhibition) LaKrisha Brown, however, connected on one of two free throws in her squad's next possession to give MSU a one-point lead. Brown, a preseason first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference pick, finished the contest with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Amanda Green added 18 points and six assists.
Following a defensive stand and another MSU free throw, USI found itself trailing by two with less than 10 seconds remaining. Morehead State had a chance to extend its lead to three, but Brandi Rayburn, who scored 16 points, missed the back end of a double-bonus three throw attempt, giving USI the opportunity to tie or win the contest in the closing seconds.
Senior forward Sabrina Brandon
(Danville, Illinois), who pulled down the rebound, got the ball up court to junior forward Jasmine Baines
(Jeffersonville, Indiana). Baines followed by getting the ball to Jolly, who hit the off-balance three-pointer to give USI the one-point victory.
Jolly finished the contest with 13 points, while Baines finished with a team-high 17 points. Thiesenhusen added 16 points, five rebounds, and four steals, while senior guard Leah Stormont
(Haubstadt, Indiana) finished with a game-high-tying six assists and four rebounds.
USI built a 38-30 halftime lead on the strength of a blistering 55.6 percent shooting performance. For the game, the Eagles shot 51.9 percent from the field. The Eagles extended their lead to 17 by opening the second half with a 16-7 run.
The Eagles open the regular season November 15 when they travel to Warrensburg, Missouri, to take on the University of Central Missouri at 6 p.m. They open their home schedule November 21 against the University of Illinois-Springfield.
