Eagles renew rivalries with NKU, Bellarmine
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team will go through its version of "Rivalry Week" as it travels to Highland Heights, Kentucky, to take on No. 14 Northern Kentucky University Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (CST) and Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University Saturday at 4:45 p.m.
USI (7-6, 2-3 GLVC) is coming off a 65-50 victory over Lewis University, which was tied for the GLVC East Division lead prior to the contest. The Screaming Eagles used a dominating defensive effort in the first half and an aggressive offensive outing in the second half to pull out the victory and end a two-game losing streak.
Senior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in the second half against Lewis, while junior forward/center Ninette Evans (Memphis, Tennessee) tallied 10 points to go along with a game and career-high 14 rebounds.
For the season, Baines leads the Eagles with 18.6 points per game and is second on the team with 6.2 rebounds per contest. Evans, who joined the starting lineup January 3 against the University of Missouri-St. Louis, is averaging 7.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in four games as a starter.
Freshman guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) is second on the team with 9.2 points per contest. She leads USI with 2.9 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Junior forward/center Brittany Neuman (Huntingburg, Indiana) leads the Eagles with 6.8 rebounds per outing.
Thursday's contest marks the 50th meeting between USI and Northern Kentucky. The Norse lead the all-time series, 32-17, and are 10-6 against the Eagles since 2000. Northern Kentucky defeated USI, 70-56, at the Physical Activities Center last season.
Northern Kentucky (11-3, 4-2 GLVC) has won three of its last four after posting a 62-60 victory at the University of Indianapolis and a 79-39 win at Saint Joseph's College last week.
Senior center Angela Healy leads the Norse with 15.3 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, while junior forward/center Cassie Brannen and junior guard Jessie Slack are chipping in 13.4 and 12.7 points per contest, respectively.
USI's meeting with Bellarmine will be the 53rd time the two programs have faced each other, which puts the series in a tie for the most meetings between USI and another school. The Eagles have played Kentucky Wesleyan College and the University of Indianapolis 53 times as well.
The Knights lead the all-time series, 36-16, and are 11-4 against the Eagles since 2000. Bellarmine defeated USI, 68-61, at the PAC last season.
Bellarmine (11-6, 3-3 GLVC) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with its 70-56 setback at Indianapolis last Saturday. The Knights posted victories over Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and nationally-ranked Drury University during their five game winning streak.
Senior guard Angela Smith leads the Knights with 15.8 points per game, while senior center Ashley Lewallen is second on the team with 11.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. Junior forward Dana Beaven is chipping in 10.2 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per outing.
