and track and field...finished in USI's top five in five races, finishing as
USI's fourth runner at the Belmont Open...was in USI's top seven in seven of
USI's eight races...had a top 5k time of 19:27.49 and top finish of 16th at
the University of Evansville Invitational...finished 25th at the GLVC
Championships and had a top 6k time of 23:19.60 at the NCAA II Great Lakes
Regional Championships. INDOOR TRACK: Competed in one race, finishing
12th in the 5,000 meters at the GLVC Championships with a time of 19:45.51.
OUTDOOR TRACK: Competed in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, posting a top

Louisville Cardinal Classic...finished 26th at the GLVC Championships with a
season-best 6k time of 24:00.00...recorded a top finish of 21st at the
Saluki Invitational. INDOOR TRACK: Ran the 800 meters at the Stan
Lyons Open in 2:36.84...also competed in the mile at the Stan Lyons Open,
running a 5:32.44...placed fourth at the DePauw Classic in the 1,500 meters
with a time of 5:04.23...finished 10th in the 3,000 meters at the GLVC
Championships with a time of 11:10.38...finished ninth in the 5,000 meters
at the GLVC Championships with a time of 18:47.22. OUTDOOR TRACK:
Competed in the 3,000 meters, posting a top time and finish (10:39.97/5th)
at the Vanderbilt Invitational...also competed in the 5,000 meters, posting

CROSS COUNTRY: Posted a season-best 5k time of 20:15.0 at the Indiana
Intercollegiate...recorded a top 6k time of 26:07.80 at the Indiana State
Invitational...finished 41st at the GLVC Championships with a 6k time of
26:11.0. INDOOR TRACK: Finished second in the 800 meters at the Tiger
Invitational with a season-best time of 2:29.46...ran a hand-timed
season-best 5:31.5 in the mile at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge...ran the 3,000
meters in 11:49.01 at the Tiger Invitational. OUTDOOR TRACK: Had a
season-best time of 2:34.86 in the 800 meters and 5:06.81 in the 1,500

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Battled injuries to earn All-GLVC honors in the
high jump with a second-place finish at the GLVC Championships...finished
first at the Rose-Hulman Invitational, the DePauw Invitational, and the
DePauw Classic...had a season-best and NCAA II provisional qualifying jump
of 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches at the Rose-Hulman Invitational. OUTDOOR TRACK &
FIELD: Came on strong down the stretch to earn All-America honors for
the second time in her career and the first time in outdoor
competition...finished fifth at the NCAA II Championships with a mark of 5
feet, 7 1/4 inches...also earned All-GLVC honors after winning the GLVC
Championship with a mark of 5 feet, 5 1/2 inches...finished first at the
Butler Twilight with a USI outdoor record of 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches...recorded
four first-place finishes.
2003
INDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Became the first
competitor in USI history to earn All-America honors in a fielding
event...placed sixth at the NCAA II Championships in the high jump with a
mark of 5 feet, 5.75 inches...recorded a season-best and school-record 5
foot, 8 inch jump on two occasions...finished first in five of seven
meets...won the GLVC Championship in the high jump and earned All-GLVC
honors for her efforts...broke the GLVC Championship record in the high jump
with her 5 foot, 6 inch jump...ranked as high as second in the country in
the high jump. OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD: Finished in a tie for ninth in
the NCAA II Championships in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 5
inches...earned All-GLVC honors after winning the GLVC Championship with an
outdoor-best mark of 5 feet, 7.25 inches...performance is a GLVC Outdoor
Championship record as well as a USI outdoor school record...competed in one
other event, finishing in a tie for first in the high jump in the Indy
Relays with a mark of 5 feet, 6 inches.

season-best mile time of 5:36.43 at the Hoosier Hills Invitational and a
season-best 5,000-meter time of 18:40.53...finished third in the 5,000
meters and sixth in the 3,000 meters at the GLVC Championships. OUTDOOR
TRACK: Competed in the 3,000 meters, the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and
the 5,000 meters...took first place in the steeplechase at the Gerald

meters at the Rose-Hulman Invitational...had a season-best 200-meter time of
26.94 seconds at the Tiger Invitational...finished 6th at the GLVC
Championships in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 59.95
seconds...also competed in USI's 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay teams as well
as its Distance Medley Relay team (DMR)...helped USI take first-place in the
4x400 at the Rose-Hulman Invitational...also helped the Eagles to a
first-place finish in the DMR at the Tiger Invitational...helped her relay
teams to school-record performances in the 4x200 and 4x400 meters.
OUTDOOR TRACK: Became the first sprinter in USI history to earn All-GLVC
honors when she finished second in the 400 meters at the GLVC
Championships...also became the first sprinter in USI history to post a
provisional qualifying time with her season-best and school-record 400-meter
time of 56.25 seconds at the league meet...became USI's first competitor to
win a sprinting event with her first-place finish in the 400 meters at the
Washington University Invitational...also finished first in the 400 meters
at the Indiana Intercollegiate Little State Championships...recorded school
records in the 200 meters (:25.24) and 100 meters (:12.72)...finished eighth
in the 200 meters at the GLVC Championships...helped USI to school records
in the 4x100 and 4x400 meters.
HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated from Castle High School where she earned four varsity letters in basketball and track and field...member of CHS's 2003 4x400-meter relay team that finished ninth at the 2003 IHSAA Track and Field Championships...ran the 100 meters in :12.4, the 200 meters in :25:87, and the 400 meters in 57.0...helped CHS to a pair of SIAC, sectional, and regional championships.

Overall
Heading into the 2004-05 season, Heather Cooksey, USI's first female
national champion, is a five-time All-American, eight-time All-GLVC
performer, and a one-time All-Region performer. She has finished first a
school-record 21 times, including five GLVC championships, and holds 14
school records. She was a three-time GLVC "Freshman of the Year", the 2004
Little State Female Track Athlete of the Year, and the 2004 Great Lakes
Region Outdoor Track Female Athlete of the Year. She also was named the 2004
GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for women's track and field and is a
four-time Academic All-GLVC performer. She was named second-team Academic
All-District V in 2004.
2003-04
CROSS COUNTRY: Earned Academic All-GLVC and second-team Academic
All-District V honors for both cross country and track and field...earned
All-GLVC and All-Region honors...finished third at the GLVC Championships
and fifth at the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Championships...finished 45th
at the NCAA II National Championships...recorded season-best 6k time of
22:11.10 at the regional championships...won the Evansville Invitational
with a season-best 5k time of 18:01.03...finished in the top 10 in six races
and in the top five in five races...was USI's number one finisher in two
meets and USI's number two runner in six races. INDOOR TRACK: Earned
All-America honors after finishing third in the mile at the NCAA II
Championships with a school-record time of 4:46.44...earned a pair of All-GLVC
honors after winning GLVC Championships in the 800 meters and the
mile...finished first in eight of the nine individual races she competed
in...also qualified, provisionally, for the NCAA II Championships in the 800
meters...had a season-best 800-meter time of 2:16.53 at the GLVC
Championships...helped USI's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team to a

first female national champion in any sport when she won the 3,000 meters at
the NCAA II Championships...finished six seconds faster than the
second-place performer at the national championships, finishing the event
with a school-record time of 9:32.76...also finished second in the 5,000
meters the following day at the NCAA II Championships...earned two
All-America awards for her performances at the NCAA II Championships...named
the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for women's track and field as well as
the Great Lakes Region Female Track Athlete of the Year...earned All-GLVC
honors after winning the GLVC championship in the 3,000 meters...qualified,
provisionally, for the NCAA II Championships in four events (800, 1,500,
3,000, and 5,000 meters)...her 3,000-meter time of 9:33.71 at the GLVC
Championships was an automatic qualifier...had a season-best 5,000-meter
time of 16:46.79 at the Mt. SAC Relays...ran her fastest 1,500-meter time of
4:30.07 at the Gerald England Invitational and her fastest 800-meter time of
2:13.53 came at the Little State Championships where she was named the
Indiana Little State Female Track Athlete of the Year...finished first in
seven of the nine individual races she competed in.
2002-03
CROSS COUNTRY: Earned GLVC "Freshman of the Year" honors after
placing sixth at the GLVC Championships with a season-best 6k time of
22:42.00...also earned All-GLVC honors with her finish at the conference
championships...had a season-best 5k time of 18:49.90 at the Louisville
Cardinal Classic...earned Academic All-GLVC honors. INDOOR TRACK:
Earned GLVC "Freshman of the Year" honors after winning GLVC Championships
in the mile and the distance medley relay (DMR)...also earned two All-GLVC
awards for performances in the mile and the DMR (USI's DMR team set a
school-record with a 12:28.42)...ran the 1,600-meter leg of the DMR...Cooksey's 4:59.09 at the GLVC Championships
was a conference meet record...finished 11th in the mile with a
school-record time of 4:58.09 at the NCAA II Championships...holds the
school-record in the indoor 1,500 meters with a time of 4:44.8...finished
first in the mile with a time of 5:00.07 at the DePauw Classic. OUTDOOR
TRACK: Along with teammate, Jenny Farmer, Cooksey became the first female
competitor in the program's history to earn two All-America honors in the
same season...finished second in both the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters
at the NCAA II Championships...ran the 3,000 meters at the NCAA II
Championships in a school-record 9:39.16, less than three-tenths of a second
away from winning the national championship...was less than four seconds off
the lead in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA II Championships, crossing the
finish line in 16:52.31...finished first in the 5,000 meters at the
Hillsdale Gina Relays with a school-record time of 16:39.33...completed the
sweep of the GLVC "Freshman of the Year" honors, becoming the first USI
athlete to win GLVC "Freshman of the Year" honors three times...won the
3,000 meters at the GLVC Championships with a league meet record of
9:48.37...recorded a USI freshman record in the 1,500 meters with a time of
4:42.77 at the Little State Championships...won three championships during the outdoor season...earned

INDOOR TRACK: Earned All-America honors in the long jump with her
sixth-place performance at the NCAA II Championships...jumped 19 feet, 1 1/4
inches to win the GLVC Championship and qualify for nationals...also earned
All-GLVC honors...finished first in the long jump four times, second once,
and sixth twice...also competed in the triple jump, posting a top mark of 28
feet, 1/4 inches, and the 200 meters, posting a top time of 28.36
seconds...ran a leg on USI's school-record 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay
teams. OUTDOOR TRACK: Became the first female athlete in USI history
to earn All-America honors in the indoor and outdoor seasons in the same
year when she earned All-America honors with a second-place performance in
the long jump at the NCAA II Championships...her school-record mark of 20
feet, 1 1/2 inches was less than an inch from a national championship...was
ranked first in Division II for most of the season after recording a jump of
19 feet, 11 1/4 inches at the Indy Relays...competed on USI's first 4x100
and outdoor 4x400-meter relay teams...also ran the 100 meters 12.82 seconds.

INDOOR TRACK: Posted USI's fastest 3,000 and 5,000 meter times of the
