Eagles set to run at GLVC Indoor Championships
The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will be competing at the Great Lakes Valley Conference championships this Saturday, February 23 in Romeoville, Illinois.
On the women’s side, junior distance runner Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) is looking to qualify for nationals in the mile run for the second consecutive season. The mark she will need to make is estimated at 5:00.85. Farmer ran 5:06.20 a week ago at the 2002 USA Open in Carbondale, Illinois.
Sophomore Jalyn Carter (Petersburg, Indiana) is seeded fourth in the high jump and the pole vault. Carter shattered her own school record after clearing 8’06.75” in the pole vault last Friday in the EIU Friday Night Special in Charleston, Illinois. It was the first time Carter had pole-vaulted this season.
On the men’s side, sophomore distance runner Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana) is a threat in both the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters. Byrne, who won the GLVC Individual Cross Country Championship back in October, finished third a week ago in the 3,000 meters of the 2002 USA Open. Byrne ran 8:40.94 last week in the 3,000 meters.
Senior distance runner Jeff Rumsey (Rising Sun, Indiana) finished third in the both the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters a year ago and could also contend in this season’s meet.
Junior middle distance runner David Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) is hoping to regain the form that earned him the 2000 GLVC Freshman of the Year in the mile.
The Eagles also figure to be strong in the men’s distance medley. USI enters the meet with the top time of the season.
