Five Eagle runners qualify for nationals,
Schwartz narrowly misses qualifying time in Louisville

The University of Southern Indiana track and field team had five runners qualify for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships yesterday at the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Michigan. Head Coach Mike Hillyard took just five runners to the event while sending another squad to the Cardinal Open in Louisville, Kentucky.

It marks the first time in USI history that the Screaming Eagles have had five runners post qualifying times for nationals at the same meet. If all the NCAA II provisional times hold up it will be the first time USI will take five runners to nationals.

Freshman distance runner Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) finished second in the women's 10,000-meter run with school-record 36:36.60. Schneider, who won the women's 5,000-meters at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships last week with a NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 17:58.56, finished 1:24 under the NCAA II provisional qualifying time in the 10,000 meters.

Junior distance runner Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) finished fourth in the women's 5,000-meter run by posting a NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 17:32.51, just two seconds off her personal best. It is the third event Farmer has qualified for this spring, adding to the 1,500 and the 3,000.

Senior Jeff Rumsey (Rising Sun, Indiana) posted the top finish for the men's squad as he finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Rumsey posted a NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 9:21.52.

Joining Rumsey in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was junior Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana). Thurner finished fourth in the event with a NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 9:22.50.

Sophomore Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana) posted a NCAA II provisional qualifying time in the men's 10,000-meter run. Byrne, who has already qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, ran a 30:24.27. It is the first time Byrne has run the event on a track as he joined Rumsey, Thurner, and Schneider with a personal best in their respective events.

Sophomore distance runner Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) narrowly missed a NCAA II provisional qualifying time in the men's 1,500-meter run at the Cardinal Open. Schwartz finished third in the event with a time of 3:57.62, less than thee seconds away from the provisional qualifying mark of 3:55.0.

USI is scheduled to compete at the Butler Twilight in Indianapolis, Indiana next Saturday, May 4. The NCAA II Outdoor Championships are Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 in San Angelo, Texas.
