Eagles set to run at GLVC Championships
The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships Saturday, October 26, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The Screaming Eagles saw their men finish second in the 2001 GLVC Championships while the women finished seventh. The women’s squad is looking for their third league title since 1998 and the men will be looking to capture their first GLVC championship since 1991.
Leading the way for the men’s squad is defending GLVC champion Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana). Byrne went on to place 15th at the NCAA Division II National Championships last season and earned All-America honors.
USI junior Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) and sophomore Will Siemers (Bensenville, Indiana) also are ready to make their move to the front of the pack on the men’s side. Thurner earned All-GLVC honors after finishing 10th at the 2001 GLVC Championships while Siemers finished 13th at the 2001 NJCAA National Championships for Rend Lake College. Siemers earned All-America honors for his efforts last fall.
Junior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) and sophomore Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) are among the favorites on the women’s side. Farmer competed at nationals two years ago and earned All-GLVC honors as a freshman in 1999. Schneider earned All-GLVC honors as a freshman in 2001 after placing 10th at the GLVC Championships.
Freshman Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) also could be a surprise for the Eagles. Cooksey has been one of USI’s top three runners in three of the four meets it has competed in this season.
The men will start the action, Saturday, with a 10:30 a.m. start while the women will follow with an 11:30 a.m. start.
