USI track and field finishes successful weekend at Stan Lyons Open,
Boberg takes first with NCAA qualifying jump

The University of Southern Indiana indoor track and field team completed a successful opening weekend Saturday at the Stan Lyons Open in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles took home two first-place finishes and had two school records fall.
Freshman sprinter/high jumper Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) won the women’s high jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying and school-record jump of 5’5.75” (1.67 meters). The jump also tied a meet record, set two years ago.
The women’s distance medley team finished second with a school-record time of 12:38.38. Freshman distance runner and GLVC cross country “Freshman of the Year”, Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana), anchored the team with a 5:08.0h split in the mile leg of the relay.
Junior distance runner Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) also recorded a top 10 finish. Farmer finished third in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:19.48.
USI’s men’s distance medley relay team finished first with a time of 10:51.15. Other top 10 finishers for the Eagles’ men’s squad were junior distance runner Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana) and freshman middle distance runner Eric Fleming (Valparaiso, Indiana). Byrne finished seventh in the mile with a time of 4:24.48 while Fleming recorded a 1:59.89 in the 800 meters to place 10th.
The Eagles will return to action Saturday, February 1, when they go back to Indianapolis to compete in the Smith-Barney Invitational.
