Eagles open outdoor season with eighth-place finishes,
Two individual championships

The University of Southern Indiana menís and womenís track and field teams each recorded eighth-place finishes Saturday afternoon as they opened their 2003 outdoor seasons at the Gerald England Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana. The womenís squad finished with 28 points while the menís squad netted 39 points.

Junior distance runner Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) and freshman middle distance/distance runner Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) finished first and second, respectively, in the womenís 3,000 meters. Farmer finished the race with a time of 10:21.16 while Cooksey came across the finish line in 10:22.06.

Freshman middle distance runner/high jumper Ashleigh Griechen (Valparaiso, Indiana) finished third in the high jump with a leap of five feet while freshman sprinter Amanda Clutter (Mackey, Indiana) and sophomore distance runner Cassie Bartelt (Huntingburg, Indiana) rounded out the womenís top 10 finishers. Clutter finished eighth in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles while Bartelt finished ninth in the 3,000 meters.

Sophomore distance runner Will Siemers (Bensenville, Indiana) and junior middle distance/distance runner Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) were USIís top finishers for the menís team. Siemers finished first in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:50.17, just two-tenths of a second away from an NCAA II provisional qualifying time, while Schwartz was second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:00.63.

Other top finishers for the menís squad included juniors Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) and Zach Toothman (Tell City, Indiana) as well as freshmen Jake England (Valparaiso, Indiana) and Eric Fleming (Valparaiso, Indiana). Thurner and Toothman finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while England finished fourth in the 1,500 meters and Fleming finished fifth in the 800 meters.

USI will return to action this Saturday, April 5, as it competes at the Washington Invitational in St. Louis, Missouri.
