University of Southern Indiana womenís track and field freshman Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) finished first in the 5,000 meters Friday night at the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Michigan. Cooksey ran an NCAA II automatic qualifying and school-record time of 16:39.33. It is the second fastest time in Division II this season.
Senior womenís runner >b>Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) finished fifth in the 5,000 meters with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:14.56. It is her team-best third event that she has posted a provisional qualifying time in, adding to the 3,000 and 1,500 meters.
Also qualifying provisionally for the womenís squad was sophomore distance runner Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana). Schneider finished fifth in the 10,000 meters with a qualifying time of 37:34.18. She competed in the 10,000 meters at last seasons NCAA II National Championships.
Posting NCAA II provisional qualifying times for the menís squad were junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and sophomore Will Siemers (Bensenville, Illinois). Schwartz finished 10th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:43.83 while Siemers finished 33rd in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:18.96.
Storm cancels Cardinal Open
The University of Southern Indiana track and field team had just three athletes compete Friday night in the Cardinal Open in Louisville, Kentucky. Severe weather caused the meet to be cancelled midway the event.
Mt. Vernon, Indiana, natives Wes Werner and Robert Rydzinski were USIís top two finishers. Werner was 13th in the menís 5,000 meters with a time of 17:00.36 while Rydzinski finished 22nd in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 2 inches.
Sophomore menís runner Joe Morrison (Shoals, Indiana) was USIís third competitor. Morrison came crossed the finish line in the 1,500 meters in 31st place with a time of 4:40.37.
