Eagles preparing for nationals
NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championship Information
Four University of Southern Indiana track and field competitors will participate in this weekend’s NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois. Competition will begin Thursday and end Saturday.
From the women’s squad, senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) is making her third consecutive trip to the outdoor championships. Farmer will compete in the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters. She ranks fifth in the nation in the 3,000 and 15th in the nation in the 5,000.
Freshmen Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) is also competing in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Cooksey ranks second, nationally, in both events and is making her third trip to a national championship event this year. She competed in the NCAA II Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field National Championships earlier in the year.
Already having earned All-America honors during the indoor track and field season, freshman Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) will compete in the high jump where she ranks sixth in the nation. She placed sixth in the high jump at the indoor national championships, becoming the first competitor in school history to earn All-America honors in a field event.
Senior Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) will represent the men’s squad in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Thurner ranks fifth, nationally, in the event and is making his first trip to the NCAA II Outdoor Championships.
The Screaming Eagles will begin competition Thursday with the preliminaries of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and women’s 3,000 meters. The steeplechase is slated for 5:50 p.m. while the 3,000 meters is scheduled to begin at 6:50 p.m.
Finals for the women’s 3,000 meters are scheduled for Friday at 7:20 p.m. while the finals of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase are set for 4 p.m. on Saturday. Other finals on Saturday include the women’s high jump (5 p.m.) and the women’s 5,000 meters (7:30 p.m.).
USI cross country inks three
The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams announced the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2003 season. (More)
