University of Southern Indiana women’s track and field freshman Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) raced out to second and fifth place finishes, respectively, in the 5,000 meters Saturday evening at the NCAA II Outdoor Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois.
With their finishes, both runners pick up All-America honors for the second consecutive day and boost the USI women’s track and field team to its first top 10 finish in the program’s history. The Screaming Eagles, which had just three competitors, picked up 23 points to finish ninth.
Cooksey, who finished second in the 3,000 meters Friday night, ran the 5,000 meters in 16:52.31 to finish second. She was less than four seconds way from the top finisher.
Farmer, who finished sixth in the 3,000 meters Friday night despite finishing the last two laps with one shoe, placed fifth in the 5,000 meters after running a personal-best 16:59.78.
Freshman Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) finished in tie for ninth in the high jump while senior Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) finished 11th in the finals of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Boberg reached 5 feet, 5 inches in her second attempt at the height while Thurner ran the steeplechase in 9:28.20.
