Junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) finished third Friday evening at the Belmont Opener to lift the University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish. Eight NCAA Division I teams competed in the nine-team field, which was won by Alabama.
The Screaming Eagles, who finished third in the event last season, had their top five runners finish with better times Friday than that of Joey Byrne’s second-place time from last season’s Belmont Opener.
Schwartz finished the 5k race in 14:55.27, less than 11 seconds off the winning pace.
Senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) led the USI women’s team to a fifth place finish. Farmer finished the two-mile course with a time of 11:18.41, good enough for ninth.
Ten teams competed in on the women’s side, with eight of the 10 teams representing NCAA Division I institutions.
Track and field All-American Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) finished 14th with a time of 11:24.12.
The Eagles will return to action Friday, September 19, when they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, for the Indiana Intercollegiate.
