USI cross country wins Illinois/Missouri Border Wars

The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams took home the team championships Saturday at the Illinois/Missouri Border Wars in Edwardsville, Illinois. It is the second this season both Screaming Eagle squads have won a meet.
Sophomore Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while junior Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) placed eighth to lead the women’s squad to a team score of 73, 26 points better than that of second-place and meet-host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Cooksey finished the 5k race with a time of 18:29.91 while Farmer crossed the finish line in 18:35.72. Schneider finished with a 5k time of 18:50.98.
Sophomore Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) paced the men’s squad as he finished sixth with an 8k time of 25:49.90. Junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) finished eighth with an 8k time of 26:03.39. The men’s squad also finished with a team total of 73 points, 14 better than that of second-place Rend Lake Community College.
For many of the USI runners today, this will be the last action they see until the GLVC Championships take place Saturday, October 25, in Romeoville, Illinois. The Eagles are expected to run a split squad at the University of Evansville Invitational next weekend.
