USI women’s cross country finishes 12th at nationals

The University of Southern Indiana women’s cross country team finished 12th Saturday at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Cary, North Carolina. The Screaming Eagles, who will host the 2004 NCAA II Championships, finished two spots better than their finish in 2002.
Senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) placed 44th to the to lead the Eagles, while sophomore Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) was right behind Farmer at 45th.
Farmer finished the 6k course with a time of 22:53.2, while Cooksey crossed the finish line in 22:55.2.
Junior Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) finished 84th (23:33.3) and freshman Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) finished 94th (23:48.0), while junior Laura Helhowski (Hebron, Indiana) and sophomore Lydia Flora (North Manchester, Indiana) finished 137th and 158th, respectively. Junior Cassie Bartelt (Huntingburg, Indiana) rounded out USI’s competitors with a finish of 164.
USI, which had just one senior (Farmer) on its squad in 2003, will look to build upon its successes as the Eagles enter the 2004 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. Farmer finishes her career at USI as one of the most prolific runners in school history. She earned a pair of All-America awards during the 2003 outdoor track and field season and competed at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships four times.
Farmer also earned a multitude of awards, including three All-GLVC and four All-Region honors in cross country.
