Cooksey, Perry lead USI women to fourth-place,
Schwartz earns All-GLVC honors for USI men
ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—Sophomore Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and freshman Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana) combined to win three events to lead the University of Southern Indiana women’s track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the GLVC Indoor Championships Saturday. The Screaming Eagles recorded 93 points as a team as they recorded their highest finish in the program’s history.
Cooksey finished first in both 800 meters and the mile, setting NCAA II provisional qualifying times in both races. Perry shattered the GLVC meet record and solidified her NCAA II provisional qualifying mark in the long jump as she leaped 19 feet, 1 ¼ inches.
Both earned All-GLVC honors with their performances.
Joining Cooksey and Perry on the All-GLVC team was sophomore Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) and junior Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana). Boberg finished second in the high jump, while Schneider finished second in the 5,000 meters.
Boberg had the tie-breaker over freshman high jumper Molly Gilland (Osgood, Indiana), who matched Boberg’s NCAA II provisional qualifying mark of five feet, 5 ¼ inches.
In the men’s competition, junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) was USI’s lone All-GLVC performer. Schwartz’s second-place finish in the 3,000 meters, combined with junior Will Siemers’ (Bensenville, Illinois) third-place finish in the 5,000 meters, lifted the men’s squad to a sixth-place finish.
Both the USI men’s and women’s distance medley teams recorded second-place finishes as well.
USI’s performers that have posted NCAA II provisional qualifying marks throughout the indoor season will have to wait and find out whether or not their marks will hold up. USI competitors that have met provisional qualifying standards include Boberg (high jump), Cooksey (800m/mile), Gilland (high jump), and Perry (long jump).
The NCAA II Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, in Boston, Massachusetts.
