Cooksey/Perry meet provisional qualifying standards
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s track and field teams set eight school records Saturday at the Gerald England Invitational at Key Stadium.
Behind the efforts of seven school-record performances and four first-place finishes, the USI women placed third with 89 points.
Leading the Screaming Eagle women with first-place finishes was sophomore All-American Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) as well as freshman All-American Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana), freshman triple jumper/sprinter Erin Kutcosky (West Frankfort, Illinois), and freshman distance runner Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana).
Cooksey and Perry both met provisional qualifying standards in their respective events. Cooksey finished the 1,500 meters with a meet and USI school-record time of 4:30.07, while Perry set the meet and USI school-record with a mark of 19 feet, 8 ¾ inches in the long jump. Both marks are expected to be amongst the best in the NCAA Division II when this week’s performance list is released.
Burgin finished first in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:46.51, while Kutcosky tied for first in the triple jump with a school-record mark of 36 feet, five inches.
Freshman sprinter Natalie Clark (Newburgh, Indiana) set school records in the 100 meters and 400 meters and was the lead-off leg of USI’s school-record setting 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams.
Senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) won the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:58.88 to lead the men’s squad to a seventh place showing. The Eagles took home four of the top five finishers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and had one other top five finisher with freshman thrower Luke Keller’s (Jasper, Indiana) school-record and fifth-place heave of 45 feet, 8 ½ inches in the shot put.
The Eagles will return to action Saturday, April 3, when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take part in the Washington University Invitational.
