INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women’s track and field team finished third out of 17 teams this past weekend at the Indiana Intercollegiate’s 99th annual Little State Championships. The Screaming Eagles had six first-place finishes and 12 top five finishes en route to 107 points.

Sophomore Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) won the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters to lead the Eagles. Cooksey, who ranks first nationally in the 1,500 and third in the 5,000 meters, was named the Female Track Athlete of the Year as she set meet records and NCAA II provisional qualifying times in both events.

Freshman Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana) leaped 19 feet, eight inches, to claim the title in the long jump, while fellow classmate Erin Kutcosky (West Frankfort, Illinois) jumped 35 feet, 9 ½ inches, to take first place in the triple jump.

High jumpers Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) and Molly Gilland (Osgood, Indiana) finished first and second, respectively, after both posted marks of five feet, 3 ¾ inches.

Newburgh, Indiana, native Natalie Clark (Castle) continued her climb toward an NCAA II provisional time in the 200 and 400 meters. Clark, a freshman, finished second in the 200 with a school-record time of 25.24 seconds and was first for the second straight week in the 400 meters with a school-record time of 57.12 seconds.

The USI men’s squad finished 11th behind the efforts of junior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) and senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois). Davis finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.04 and finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with an NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 9:24.63.

Schwartz was second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:55.26.

USI returns to action this Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17, when it competes at the Commodore Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee. Cooksey and Schwartz will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California.
