USI cross country/track and field signs two
The University of Southern Indiana cross country/track and field teams announced that Meagan Scheidler (Terre Haute, Indiana) and Doug Higgins (Indianapolis, Indiana) have signed national letters of intent to compete for the Screaming Eagles in 2004-05. Scheidler and Higgins are the first two runners to sign with Head Coach Mike Hillyard’s Eagles this spring.
Scheidler will be a freshman in the fall after attending Terre Haute South Vigo High School where she won sectional championships in 2001 and 2002. She helped VHS to team championships at sectionals in 2002 and 2003.
The honor roll student at VHS finished 36th at the IHSAA State Meet in 2002 and has a top 4k time of 15 minutes, 15 seconds. She was named the Vigo County Outstanding Female runner in 2001 and 2002 and was a member of VHS’s 4x800 relay team that finished 17th at the 2002 IHSAA Track and Field Championships.
“I expect Meagan to make an immediate impact,” Hillyard stated. “She has the ability to step in and earn a spot among our top five this fall. Down the road, I think she is going to be one of the best we have ever had here at USI.”
Higgins earned honorable mention All-State honors in cross country as a senior at Roncalli High School in 2003. He also was a two-time All-Sectional and All-Regional performer while earning All-Sectional honors in track and field.
The Academic All-State performer helped RHS to its first-ever semi-state appearance in 2003, while posting the school’s second-fastest 5k time (16:13) in school history.
“Doug is going to be a late bloomer,” Hillyard predicted. “I would not be surprised if he is a top five runner for us in a year’s time. It’s going to take a year of base-building before we start to see big things from Doug, but he will definitely be someone who can step up in 2005 when we lose several of our top seniors.”
