USI runners sparkle in opener
EVANSVILLE, Ind.óBoth the University of Southern Indiana menís and womenís cross country teams took first-place Saturday at the University of Evansville Early Bird Invitational. The menís squad bested three teams with a final score of 21 points, while the womenís squad defeated UE in a two-team battle with a score of 19 points.
Junior All-American Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) won the womenís competition with a course-record time of 14 minutes, 14.46 seconds. Sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) took third with a time of 14 minutes, 52.33 seconds.
The Screaming Eagles had seven of the top 10 finishers in the womenís 4k race, while the menís squad had six of the top 10 finishers in their 6k event.
Senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) was the menís top finisher and finished second overall to UEís Nick Waninger with a time of 18 minutes, 53.22 seconds. Junior Rob Garwood (Columbus, Indiana), senior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana), and junior Jake England (Valparaiso, Indiana) rounded out the top five finishers in the menís competition.
The Eagles will return to action September 17 when they take part in the Indiana Intercollegiate in West Lafayette, Indiana. Both squads will be looking to defend their Little State titles.
