USI runners ready to defend Little State titles
The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams will be looking to defend their Little State Championships Friday evening when they compete in the Indiana Intercollegiate in West Lafayette, Indiana.
USI, which is ranked 18th in the men’s national rankings and 13th in the women’s national rankings, finished sixth in the women’s overall and third in the men’s overall at the 2003 Indiana Intercollegiate.
Junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) is a favorite to win the women’s overall individual title Friday. Cooksey, who is coming off a victory at the University of Evansville Early Bird Invitational, has won 16 of the last 19 races she has competed in dating back to the start of the indoor track and field season last January.
The men’s squad is led by senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) as well as juniors Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) and Rob Garwood (Columbus, Indiana). Schwartz was second at the UE Early Bird Invitational, while Garwood and Davis were third and fourth, respectively.
USI will return home September 25 to host the Stegemoller Classic.
