Stegemoller Classic offers glimpse at nationals
Fifteen schools from 11 different states will be featured at the Stegemoller Classic, which returns to the University of Southern Indiana Cross Country Course Saturday for the first time since 2001. The men’s 8k race starts at 9:45 a.m. and the women’s 6k race will follow at 10:30 a.m.
The USI Cross Country Course starts and finishes at the Intramural Fields on Broadway Avenue.
This year’s Stegemoller Classic will offer a glimpse into some of the teams that could be competing at the NCAA Division II National Championships this November. Six schools entered in the women’s competition competed at the NCAA II National Championships in 2003, while seven schools in the men’s competition competed at nationals last season.
USI, whose men’s squad is ranked 18th and women’s squad is ranked 13th in the country, will be looking to get back on track after a sub-par performance at the Indiana Intercollegiate last week. The men finished third in the Little State competition and seventh overall last week, while the women’s squad was second in the Little State competition and eighth overall.
Senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and junior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) lead the men’s squad, while junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) lead the women’s squad.
Schwartz and Davis finished second and third in the Little State competition a week ago, while Cooksey won the Little State title and finished fifth overall in the women’s competition. Burgin was seventh in the Little State competition.
