EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country teams returned to action Saturday as they competed at the Border War Cross Country Invitational on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cross Country Course. The Screaming Eagles’ women finished 5th out of 28 teams, while the men finished 7th out of 26 teams.
Junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) finished second with a 5k time of 18:06.70 to lead the women’s squad, while sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) finished 22nd with a time of 19:00.18.
The men, who welcomed back former All-American Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana) to their lineup, were led by junior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) and senior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois). Davis finished 13th with an 8k time of 26:03.82, while Schwartz was 14th with a time of 26:04.73.
Byrne was quiet in his return as he finished 83rd with a time of 27:48.13. He missed all of the 2003 season with a leg injury and the Eagles did not think they would have him back in 2004. The 2001 All-American has since made a recovery and the Eagles are hoping he can be a big contributor when the conference meet rolls around in two weeks.
The Eagles will compete at the University of Evansville Invitational October 16 and the GLVC Championships are October 23 in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
