USI women third men eighth at Little State
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.óThe University of Southern Indiana womenís track and field team scored 90 points to finish third at the 100th annual Indiana Intercollegiate Little State Championships Saturday at the Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium. The Screaming Eaglesí men finished eighth with 45.5 points.
Junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) finished first in the 800 meters as well as the 1,500 meters to lead the womenís squad. Cooksey set a school-record and posted an NCAA II automatic qualifying time of four minutes, 26.15 seconds in the 1,500 meters.
USIís women recorded six first-place finishes in all. In addition to Cooksey, sophomores Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana) and Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) finished first in the long jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, while senior Crystal Stock (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) paced the field in the 5,000 meters. All three met NCAA II provisional qualifying standards in their respective events.
Junior Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) also recorded a top finish, placing first in the high jump, while sophomore Natalie Clark (Newburgh, Indiana) was second in the 400 meters.
Freshman Scott Forbey (Washington, Indiana) led the menís squad, finishing first in the high jump with a school-record leap of six feet, 6.75 inches and fourth in the pole vault. Junior Brad Orndorff (Greenfield, Indiana) chipped in a second-place performance in the 110-meter hurdles, while junior Jake England (Valparaiso, Indiana) was fourth in the 1,500 meters.
The Eagles are planning to send Cooksey to Walnut, California, to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays April 15-16, while the rest of the womenís squad will join the men to compete in the Indy Relays in Indianapolis April 16.
