WALNUT, Calif.—University of Southern Indiana junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) continued her mastery of the track Friday night as she won the 5,000 meters at the 47th running of the Mt. SAC Relays.
Cooksey broke her own school-record and set her second NCAA II automatic qualifying time this spring as she finished the race in 16 minutes, 32.97 seconds. She set an automatic qualifying time in the 1,500 meters last week at the Indiana Little State Championships.
The previous school-record in the 5,000 meters stood at 16 minutes, 39.33 seconds, a time Cooksey posted at the Hillsdale Relays in 2003. The eight-time All-American ran the 5,000 meters in a season-best 16 minutes, 46.79 seconds at Mt. SAC in 2004.
Cooksey will rejoin the Screaming Eagles April 22-23 as they compete in the Hillsdale Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Michigan. USI sent a small sprint and fielding team to Indiana State today. Results will be released on Sunday.
