Eagles to compete at GLVC Championships
EVANSVILLE, Ind.óThe University of Southern Indiana menís and womenís track and field teams will compete at the GLVC Outdoor Championships Friday and Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois.
USIís womenís squad is led by junior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and sophomore Candace Perry (Anderson, Indiana). Cooksey, who will compete in the 800 and 3,000 meters, ranks in the top four nationally in three events, including the 3,000 where she is ranked first. Perry ranks first, nationally, in the long jump and will be looking to secure her fourth GLVC Championship in the event.
The Screaming Eagles will have three women trying to solidify their NCAA II provisional qualifying marks as well as take home individual conference titles. Junior Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) ranks 12th, nationally, in the high jump, while sophomore Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) and senior Crystal Stock (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) rank seventh, nationally, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 3,000 meters, respectively.
Sophomore sprinter Natalie Clark (Newburgh, Indiana) also could make an impact on the womenís teams as she will be competing in the 200 and 400 meters. She was second in the 400 meters at the 2004 GLVC Outdoor Championships.
Junior sprinter Brad Orndorff (Greenfield, Indiana) and freshman Scott Forbey (Washington, Indiana) will lead the menís squad into this weekendís action. Orndorff has a good shot to bring home a title in the 110-meter hurdles, while Forbey figures to be a contender in the high jump and pole vault.
Orndorff also will run a leg on USIís 4x100 meter relay team, which could contend for top-two finish.
USIís menís distance runners will be led by junior Jake England (Valparaiso, Indiana). England, who has run the 1,500 meters under four minutes twice this season, is among the favorites to take home the title in that event. England, who needs to lower his season-best time by four seconds to reach the NCAA II qualifying standard in the 1,500 meters, also will compete in the 5,000 meters.
