Dixon chooses USI to continue running career
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women’s cross country/track and field team announced that Christy Dixon (Owensboro, Kentucky) has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the Screaming Eagles and Head Coach Mike Hillyard in 2005-06. Dixon is the fourth runner to sign with the women’s cross country/track and field program.
A senior at Owensboro Catholic High School, Dixon earned second-team All-State honors as a senior in cross country this past fall after earning honorable mention All-State honors in 2001 and 2003. Dixon was a four-time state qualifier in cross country, where she was 14th at the Kentucky Class AA Championships this past fall, and OCHS’s most valuable runner in 2004.
An all-around runner, Dixon has competed in anything from the 200 meters to the 5,000 meters. The three-time state qualifier in track finished eighth in the 400 meters at the Kentucky Class AA State Track and Field Championships in 2004 and ninth in the 200 meters at the state meet in 2003.
“Christy has a lot of natural ability and very good speed for a distance runner,” Hillyard said. “It will take a year for her to really start to develop aerobically, and when she does, Christy has the potential to be a national caliber middle distance runner at the NCAA II level. She is very excited about the opportunity to train and compete at a higher level.”
Dixon joins incoming freshmen Kathy Goebel (Evansville, Indiana), Kate Powell (Columbus, Indiana), and Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana).
