Eagle runners capture individual titles in season-opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana men’s and women’s cross country runners Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois) and Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) each recorded first-place finishes Saturday in the season-opening University of Evansville Early Bird Invitational.
Alvarez finished the men’s 6k race in 18 minutes, 11.30 seconds, 26 seconds faster than runner-up Justin Kunz of Indiana State University, while Cooksey finished the women’s 4k race in 14 minutes, 02.10 seconds, 36 seconds faster than runner-up Laura Engle of ISU.
USI also got top-five performances out of senior men’s runner Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana), who finished fourth, and junior women’s runner Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana), who finished third.
Both USI squads finished second in the three-team meet, with ISU grabbing both team titles. The men finished with 36 points, just 13 points off ISU’s winning total of 23, while the women finished with 32 points, just two points off ISU’s winning total.
The Screaming Eagles return to action September 16 when they compete Indiana Intercollegiate in Bloomington, Indiana.
