USI has six conference championships
Eagle women are fourth men are fifth at GLVC
RENSSELAER, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana track and field teams produced six conference champions and seven All-GLVC awards at the GLVC Championships at Rensselaer, Indiana. The conference championships were hosted by Saint Joseph's College.
The women's team placed fourth in the conference, while the men's team finished fifth.
USI junior Melissa Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) started the Screaming Eagles' run of championships on Friday with a win in the 3000m steeplechase. Burgin ran to the championship in a NCAA Division II provisional time of 11:08.33 and earned her third career All-GLVC honor.
Burgin was followed by a pair of first time conference champions in junior Molly Gilliland (Osgood, Indiana) and freshman Brittany Stellhorn (Kokomo, Indiana). Gilliland won her first GLVC championship by posting a conference best 5-foot-4.5 in the high jump, while Stellhorn posted a time of 40:02.98 in the 10000m.
USI senior Crystal Stock (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) closed out the women's champions with wins in the 1500m and the 3000m. Stock posted a provisional winning times of 4:33.78 in the 1500m and 10:10.28 in the 3000m. The All-GLVC awards are the second and third of her career in outdoor track at USI.
USI senior David Tyler (Evansville, Indiana) won the first men's championship of the 2006 meet in the 10000m. Tyler won his first conference championship, crossing the finish line in 32:11.06.
Tyler was joined by senior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana), who had an All-GLVC performance in the 3000m steeplechase. Davis was second with a 9:35.11, finishing 24 seconds off the pace set by Brian Taghon from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a time of 9:12.32.
