Shafer wins GLVC

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana women's cross country team sophomore
Alison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) won her first conference championship at time of 21:46.07 Saturday morning at GLVC Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois. Shafer becomes the third straight USI runner to win the individual title after Heather Cooksey won the crown each of the last two seasons.
In addition to Shafer, USI also had a top 10 finish by senior
Katy Simutis (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and top 20 finishes by senior
Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) and sophomore
Kathy Goebel (Evansville, Indiana). Simutis was fourth with a time of 21:59.29.
Burgin took 11th with a time of 22:30.91, while Goebel was 15th with a time of 23:06.64.
Shafer and Simutis were named All-GLVC for their top 10 finishes. The award was the second for Shafer, who was the GLVC Freshman of the Year last fall.
As a team, the Screaming Eagles could not overcome four top 10 finishes by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to place second. The Eagles had 53 points, while the Rangers won the title with 39 points.
The USI women's cross country team resumes racing November 4 in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional. The regional will be held in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
