#7 Eagles looking to get back to nationals
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The No. 7 University of Southern Indiana women's cross country team is looking to qualify for the NCAA II Championships for the second straight season when it competes at the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Somers, Wisconsin.
Sophomore GLVC Runner of the Year Alison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) will lead the Screaming Eagles into Saturday's meet. Shafer won the individual title at the GLVC Championships as the women placed second behind No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Shafer's title marked the third straight season that the Eagles have had a runner win the individual conference title.
The Eagles need a top three finish at the regional meet to qualify for the NCAA II Championships, which will be held in Pensacola, Florida, as part of the NCAA II Fall Sports Festival November 18.
Seniors Katie Simutis (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) also need to have good races to help the Eagles reach their goal. Simutis earned All-GLVC honors with a fourth-place finish at the GLVC Championships, while Burgin was 11th in the conference meet.
Grand Valley State University, the top-ranked team in the country, is the favorite to take home the team title, while USI and UW-Parkside are expected to battle it out for second and third. The University of Findlay, ranked 23rd in the nation, also could challenge for a top-three spot.
The women's 6k race is scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m.
