Shafer leads Eagles to fifth-place finish at GLVC Championships,
Finishes first in 3,000 meters
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.— The University of Southern Indiana women's track and field team finished fifth at the GLVC Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Allison Shafer
(Plainville, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles, who finished with 47 points, with a first-place performance in the 3,000 meters. Shafer, who earned All-GLVC honors for her performance, finished the race in a track-record time of 10 minutes, 2.38 seconds.
Senior Missy Burgin
(Sellersburg, Indiana) also earned All-GLVC honors with a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters. Burgin also was third in the mile, where she posted an NCAA II provisional qualifying time of five minutes, 3.91 seconds.
In all, the Eagles had five top-five performances. USI's distance medley relay team was second with a provisional qualifying time of 12 minutes, 12.02 seconds, while sophomore Kathy Goebel
(Evansville, Indiana) finished fourth in the 5,000 meters.
USI will wait and see if its athletes that have posted provisional qualifying marks have made the final cut to compete at the NCAA II Championships, which are March 9-10 in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Eagles open the outdoor season March 23-24 at the Spring Classic in Carbondale, Illinois.
