Eagles sending five to nationals
Final Accepted List
Women Men
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's and women's track and field team is sending five runners to the NCAA II Indoor Championships. The national meet is March 9-10 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston Massachusetts.
Junior Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) is making his first trip and will compete in the men's 5,000 meters where he is seeded 11th with a time of 14 minutes, 27.21 seconds.
The women's squad will be represented in three events—the mile, 5,000 meters, and distance medley relay (DMR). The DMR consists (in order) of the 1,200 meters, 400 meter, 800 meters, and the mile.
Senior Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) is seeded ninth in the mile with an adjusted time of four minutes, 59.58 seconds and will run the lead leg for the Screaming Eagles' DMR team.
This is Burgin's third trip to the indoor nationals on USI's DMR squad, and her first time competing in an individual event. She earned All-America honors in 2005 when the Eagles finished fifth in the DMR at the NCAA II Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) will anchor USI's DMR, which is seeded 10th with a time of 11 minutes, 58.81 seconds. Shafer also is seeded 10th in the 5,000 meters with an adjusted time of 17 minutes, 10.92 seconds.
It will be Shafer's first trip to the indoor championships. She earned All-America honors in cross country this past fall after finishing 15th.
Sophomore Christy Dixon (Owensboro, Kentucky) is making her second trip to nationals as a member of USI's DMR team and will run the third leg after helping the squad to a 10th-place finish a year ago.
Freshman Lauren Crick (Evansville, Indiana), who is making her first appearance at a national championship meet, rounds out the Eagles' DMR and will run the second leg.
The Eagles will depart for Boston Wednesday, March 7.
