Shafer, Jellema run to All-America honors

BOSTON, Mass.—University of Southern Indiana track and field sophomore Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) and junior Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) earned All-America honors Saturday at the NCAA II Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Shafer earned her honor by finishing fifth in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 17 minutes, 9.34 seconds. Her performance netted the Screaming Eagles four points and a 32nd-place finish in the women's team standings.

Paul Jellema |
Jellema propelled himself into second-place on USI's all-time indoor 5,000-meter list when he crossed the finish line in 14 minutes, 17.07 seconds. His seventh-place finish in the men's 5,000 meters netted USI two points and a 36th-place finish in the men's team standings.
This marks the second All-America honors for both Shafer and Jellema during the 2006-07 academic year. Both earned All-America honors in cross country last fall.
USI opens the outdoor track and field season March 24 when it competes at the Spring Classic in Carbondale, Illinois.
