Eagles open outdoor season Saturday
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's and women's track and field teams open the 2007 outdoor season Saturday when they partake in the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis, Missouri.
Saturday's competition is the first of five meets that the Screaming Eagles are scheduled to compete in prior to the GLVC Championships May 4-5 in Edwardsville, Illinois.
Junior Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) leads the men's squad after earning All-America honors during the indoor season and in cross country last fall. Jellema finished seventh in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA II Indoor Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, earlier this month and was 24th at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships in Pensacola, Florida.
Like Jellema, sophomore Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) has earned a pair of All-America awards during this academic year. Shafer, who will lead the women's squad this spring, earned All-America honors in the 5,000 meters after finishing fifth in the event at the NCAA II Indoor Championships. She also earned the honor in cross country after finishing 15th at the NCAA II Championships in Pensacola, Florida.
