Shafer shatters school-record

WALNUT, Calif.—University of Southern Indiana track and field junior
Paul Jellema (Dyer, Indiana) posted an NCAA II automatic qualifying time of 29 minutes, 17.81 seconds in the 10,000 meters Friday night at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Jellema, who finished 12th out of 49 of the top 10,000-meter runners in the country, moved into second on USI's all-time 10,000-meter performance list.

Earlier in the night, sophomore women's runner
Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) finished 16th in the 10,000 meters with a school-record and NCAA II provisional qualifying time of 35 minutes, 51.74 seconds. The former school record (36 minutes, 36.60 seconds) was set in 2002 by Casey Schneider.
Senior
Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) also posted a provisional qualifying time in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Burgin finished eighth with a time of 10 minutes, 59.39 seconds.
USI, which also competed at the Indiana Little State Championships Friday and Saturday, competes at the Vanderbilt Invitational April 20-21 in Nashville, Tennessee.
