Eagles sending three to nationals

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's track and field team is sending three runners to the NCAA II Outdoor Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina, May 24-26.
Sophomore Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) as well as seniors Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) and Carrie Leimberger (Indianapolis, Indiana) will represent the Screaming Eagles in three events.

Shafer will double in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, while Burgin and Leimberger will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
In 2006-07, Shafer has earned All-America honors on the cross country course, where she was 15th at the NCAA II Championships and on the track, where she was fifth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA II Indoor Championships. She won the GLVC championship in cross country, the indoor 3,000 meters, and the outdoor 5,000 meters.

Burgin is making her third straight trip to the NCAA II Outdoor Championships and ranks third in the steeplechase after posting a season-best time of 10 minutes, 43.26 seconds at the Washington Invitational. Burgin won the conference title in both the steeplechase and the 3,000 meters at the GLVC Outdoor Championships.

Leimberger is making her first trip to the NCAA II Outdoor Championships and ranks 17th in the steeplechase field after posting a career-best time of 11 minutes, 11.11 seconds at the Dr. Keeler Invitational last weekend. Leimberger also competed for the Eagles at the 2005 NCAA II Cross Country Championships.
The Eagles will depart for the NCAA II Outdoor Championships Tuesday morning. The 10,000 meters is slated to begin May 24 at 6:40 p.m. (CDT), while the prelims of the steeplechase will begin May 24 at 4:50 p.m. The 5,000-meter prelims will be held May 25 at 7:30 p.m., while the final is May 26 at 6:43 p.m. The steeplechase final also is scheduled for May 26 at 4 p.m.
