Shafer advances to 5,000-meter final

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—University of Southern Indiana sophomore
Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) advanced to the final in the 5,000 meters Friday evening at the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Shafer was fifth in her heat and will be seeded ninth in Saturday's final after crossing the finish line in 17 minutes, 39.58 seconds.
Thursday night, Shafer finished fifth in the 10,000 meters en route to her third All-America honor of the 2006-07 cross country/track and field season. She will get a chance at a fourth All-America honor and a possible national championship when she takes the starting line in the final of the 5,000 meters Saturday at 6:43 p.m. (CDT).
In addition to the 5,000 meters, senior
Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) competes in the final of the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday at 4 p.m.
