Ballinger wins 3,000 meters in indoor opener

CHARLESTON, Ill.—Sophomore
Mary Ballinger (Chesterton, Indiana) won the 3,000 meters to lead the University of Southern Indiana women's track and field team in its 2008 indoor season-opener Saturday at the Eastern Illinois University Invitational.
Ballinger finished the race with a time of 10 minutes, 28.57 seconds, nearly 10 seconds faster than Indiana State University's Heather Stembridge, who placed second with a time of 10 minutes, 37.71 seconds. Ballinger also placed sixth in the mile with a time of five minutes, 22.97 seconds.

Christy Dixon (Owensboro, Kentucky) also was one of four Screaming Eagles to post top 10 finishes Saturday. Dixon was sixth in the 1,000 meters, while freshman
Leslee Getts (Corunna, Indiana) was seventh in the 3,000 meters. Freshman
Allison Laird (Greenville, Indiana) placed seventh in the 5,000 meters.
USI also got an impressive debut out of freshman
Carmisha Leary (Indianapolis, Indiana), who set the school-record in the shot put with a heave of 36 feet, 1.25 inches.
The Eagles return to action next Friday and Saturday when they take part in the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana.
