Eagles finish fourth at GLVC Championships

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana women's track and field team racked up 68 points to finish fourth at the GLVC Outdoor Championships this weekend.

Mary Ballinger |
Sophomore
Mary Ballinger (Chesterton, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters. Ballinger completed the steeplechase with her second NCAA II automatic qualifying time of the year, crossing the finish line in 10 minutes, 57.15 seconds.

As a team, the Screaming Eagles had 16 top-10 finishes including eight top-five performances. Sophomore
Christy Dixon (Owensboro, Kentucky) was fourth in the 1,500 meters and fifth in the 800 meters, while juniors
Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana) and
Sara Baysden (Shelbyville, Indiana) recorded second-place finishes in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, respectively.
Freshman
Allison Laird (Greenville, Indiana) was third in the 10,000 meters, while junior
Marcia Weflen (Rossville, Indiana) rounded out the Eagles' top-five finishes with a fifth-place showing in the steeplechase.
USI will attempt to record or better NCAA II provisional qualifying times when it returns to action Thursday and Friday at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Illinois. The NCAA II Outdoor Championships are May 22-24 in Walnut, California.
