Ballinger heading to nationals,
Sophomore ranks third in steeplechase
2008 Steeplechase Accepted list
University of Southern Indiana sophomore Mary Ballinger
(Chesterton, Indiana) is heading to the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships after the final acceptance list was announced Tuesday evening.
Ballinger will be the only Screaming Eagle competing May 22-24 in Walnut, California, as sophomores Christy Dixon
(Owensboro, Kentucky) and Brandon Campbell
(Portage, Indiana), senior Tristan Mannix
(Crothersville, Indiana), and freshman David Goodman
(Valparaiso, Indiana) did not make the cut in their respective events.
Ballinger will compete in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, an event she ranks third nationally with a season-best time of 10 minutes, 48.49 seconds.
In 2008, Ballinger reached NCAA II automatic qualifying times in the steeplechase on two occasions. She set a GLVC Outdoor meet record with her time of 10 minutes, 57.15 seconds.
An All-American in both cross country and indoor track, Ballinger will compete on the national stage for the third time this year. She was 17th at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships in November and was second in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA II Indoor Championships in March.
The prelims in the women's steeplechase are scheduled for 7:50 p.m. (CDT) on May 22, while the finals are May 24 at 7 p.m. All-America status is awarded to the top eight finishers.
Ballinger will be the third runner in school history to compete in the women's steeplechase at the national level. Former standout Missy Burgin competed three times in the steeplechase at nationals, earning All-America honors in 2007, while Carrie Leimberger also competed in the steeplechase at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
