USI is second at UE Invitational

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- University of Southern Indiana junior
Mary Ballinger (Chesterton, Indiana) won her second race of the year in leading the Screaming Eagles to a second place finish at the University of Evansville Invitational Saturday at the UE Cross Country Course.
Ballinger won the 5k race in a time of 17 minutes, 18.7 seconds, a time that ranks second all-time at USI. The new 5k time puts Ballinger into the USI record book with the second and third best 5k marks in the history of the program. Her results at the UE Invitational surpassed her time of two weeks ago at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic by nine seconds.
In Saturday's race, Ballinger led the field by 13 seconds with Valparaiso University's Laura Rolf finishing second with a mark of 17 minutes, 31.58 seconds.
Ballinger was followed for USI by junior
Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana), who finished 19th overall with time of 18 minutes, 33.06 seconds.
As a team, USI finished just two points behind Southern Illinois University and defeated 13 Division I programs.
The next action for the Eagles will be October 25 in the GLVC Championships. The league championship will be hosted by Missouri University Science & Technology in Rolla, Missouri.
