Seven cross country runners earn All-Academic honors

EVANSVILLE, Ind.Seven University of Southern Indiana men's and women's cross country runners have been named to the 2008 United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches' Association All-Academic squad.

To qualify for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least 12 semester/quarter hours through the semester of competition at the institution to be eligible for the award. The student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have placed in the top 30 percent of the total number of athletes eligible to compete at the respective regional championships, or in the top 50 percent of the field at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.

Juniors Mary Ballinger (Chesterton, Indiana), Allison Shafer (Plainville, Indiana), and Lacy Williams (Haubstadt, Indiana) as well as freshman Adrienne Curtis (Louisville, Kentucky) were among 243 Division II female student-athletes representing 101 institutions to earn All-Academic honors.

Ballinger, who has a 3.457 GPA in food and nutrition, finished 10th at the NCAA II National Championships, while Shafer, who has accumulated a 3.635 GPA in health services, was 30th at the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships.

A pre-elementary major with a 3.560 GPA, Williams was 25th at the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships. Curtis, who posted a 3.884 in food and nutrition, was 34th in the 132-competitor field at the regional meet.

Seniors Bryan Phillips (Kokomo, Indiana) and Robert Roads (Terre Haute, Indiana) as well as freshman Brendan Devine (Bethel, New York) were among 138 Division II male student-athletes from 68 institutions to earn All-Academic honors.

Phillips, who has a 3.561 GPA in exercise science, was fourth at the NCAA II Midwest Region Championships and 39th at the NCAA II National Championships. Roads, who has a 3.623 GPA in physical education, finished 36th in the 130-competitor field at the regional meet, while Devine, who is a history major with a 3.500 GPA, placed ninth at the regional meet and 60th at the national meet.

USI's men finished 15th as a team at the NCAA II Championships after winning their fourth straight GLVC title. The women also captured the conference championship before fourth at the regional meet.
