EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Junior Tara Wiley (Oxford, Indiana) shot an even-par 72 Monday to lead the University of Southern Indiana women's golf team to a first-place finish at the Ray Wright/Screaming Eagles' Golf Classic at Cambridge Golf Course.
The Eagles, who have won two consecutive tournaments for the first time in the program's history, shot a 314 in Monday's final round after firing a 319 to open the two-day tournament Sunday.
USI's 633 was three strokes better than the University of Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky University, who tied for second. Western Kentucky University shot a two-round 644 (326-318) to finish fourth, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville rounded out the top five with a 654 (336-318).
Wiley became the first USI player to win an individual title since the spring of 2006. She made the turn with a one-under 35 before closing the final nine holes with a 37 to finish the tournament with a five-over-par 149, five strokes better than the first-day leader and second-place finisher, Northern Kentucky's Alicia Stauffacher.
Wiley's score tied the tournament record since it was moved to Cambridge in the fall of 2005.
USI, which trailed Northern Kentucky by two strokes heading into the final round, also got a solid performance out of sophomores Jessica Dooley
(Goshen, Indiana) and Renee DeCaro
(LaPorte, Indiana). Dooley, who tied for 13th, led the Eagles Sunday with a 76 before closing the tournament with an 84. DeCaro closed the tournament with a 79, five strokes better than her first day total of 84.
USI finishes its fall season September 30-October 1 when it competes in the GLVC Fall Preview at the Kokopella Golf Course in Marion, Illinois.
