Eagles second after opening round at Cambridge
First Round Results
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The No. 24-ranked University of Southern Indiana women's golf team had four players shoot in the 70's Sunday as it closed the opening round of the Ray Wright/Screaming Eagles' Classic at Cambridge Golf Course with a season-low round of 311.
USI, which is second in the 15-team field, trails the University of Indianapolis by seven strokes after the Greyhounds set the tournament record (for Cambridge) with its score of 304.
Senior Tara Wiley
(Oxford, Indiana) led the Eagles with a four-over-par 76 Sunday and is tied for sixth heading into Monday's final round. Wiley is the defending tournament champion after shooting 77 and 72 a year ago.
Juniors Jessica Dooley
(Goshen, Indiana) and Angela Dehning
(Hazel Crest, Illinois) each shot 78 and are tied for 10th, while fellow classmate Kimberly Gottwald
(Ft. Wayne, Indiana) is tied for 14th in the 90-player field after shooting 79.
USI, which won its home tournament last season, leads Northern Kentucky University by four strokes and Western Kentucky University by five strokes. Drury University rounds out the top five after shooting 317.
Indianapolis's Kristi Piepenbrink and Lyndsay McBride are tied for the lead after going into the club house with a one-over-par 73. John A. Logan College's Jackie Jacobs is third, trailing the top two by a stroke, while Western Kentucky's Emily Wolff and Northern Kentucky's Charity Evans are tied for fourth with scores of 75.
Monday's final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shot gun start at Cambridge, which is located south of the Hwy. 41 and I-64 intersection.
