Women's Golf 2002-03 Outlook
The University of Southern Indiana women's golf team enters 2002-03 as a squad that that is maturing into a force in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. USI Head Coach Don Bisesi returns a solid nucleus in a pair of juniors and a sophomore.
The juniors who will lead the way are Jennifer Beaman (Evansville, Indiana) and Brandi Irvin (Benton, Illinois). Irvin led the Screaming Eagles as a sophomore with a 92.3 average in 10 tournaments and was USI's top player in four of the tournaments. Beaman ranked second on the squad with a 92.9 average in 10 tournaments and led the Eagles in six tournaments, three in the fall and three in the spring.
Rounding out the returnees is sophomore Megan Kreis (Lebanon, Indiana) and freshman Megan Hester (Lebanon, Indiana). Kreis averaged 102.0 in 10 tournaments and had her best round during the spring season with a 92 at the USI-Brescia College-Kentucky Wesleyan College Match-up. Hester was a redshirt in 2001-02.
To complete the roster, Coach Bisesi has recruited nine eight players for the 2002-03 season.
Signing
this spring with the Eagles is Carly Ellard (Evansville, Indiana), Tara
Ulmer (Bluffton, Indiana), Julia Sabatine (Muncie, Indiana), and Amanda
Zehner (Henderson, Kentucky).
Ellard comes to the Screaming Eagles from Mt. Vernon High School in Mt.
Vernon, Indiana where she was the women’s golf team’s most valuable
player. She is the recipient of the Academic Honors Diploma and the Young
Indiana Heroes Award.
In addition to golf, Ellard was a four-year letter winner in softball and was
MVHS’s offensive MVP as a junior.
Ulmer joins the USI squad after earning nine varsity letters in basketball,
golf, and track at Norwell High School in Ossian, Indiana. She won the Junior
Championship at the Parlor City Country Club and finished 10th at the Fremont
Invitational.
A recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in 2000, Ulmer was a named honorable
mention All-Northeast Hoosier Conference in 1999 and 2000. She was NHS’s top
golfer for two seasons and the team’s MVP in 2001.
Sabatine lettered in softball and golf at Muncie Central High School in Muncie, Indiana and was the Most Valuable Golfer as a senior in 2001. She earned a ISSMA State Division I rating (3) and helped lead MCHS to the sectional championship in 2000 and was a regional qualifier in 2000 and 2001.Sabatine also qualified for the state championships in 2002.
Walking onto the team are freshmen Melissa Groves (Elberfeld, Indiana), Megan Jung (Newburgh, Indiana), Kari Luedeman (Seymour, Indiana), and Dawn Miller (Elkhart, Indiana).
